The Job

Plan, build and deliver a third party API and application platform that is successfully adopted.

Technical Evangelist

You've had diverse responsibilities in a high-traffic web environment; being "the guy" who is there first and sets it all up won't be anything new to you, and you'll do it a little bit differently this time around from all the insight you gained the last time out.
You are fanatical about availability and stability. You respond immediately when there is a problem, but more than anything else you care about keeping things from breaking, to the point that you take on release engineering responsibilities to make sure it's done right.
Though you approach a service from a systems perspective and don't always see the world the same way as the development engineers, you can see how the world looks from their point of view and help educate them on best practices and processes for stability.
You're not purely a systems administrator. If you wanted to, you could be a development engineer as well. You are comfortable with scripting languages and able to set up monitoring and alerting infrastructure, deployment scripts, etc. Your comfort with coding feeds your ability to make infrastructure choices, which you do with a strong systems perspective.
You have solid chops as a MySQL database administrator. You're intimately familiar with the intricacies of replication, query analysis, and analytic reporting, and are an active participant in discussions about appropriate schemas and queries.
You're comfortable with service-oriented architectures, data buses, non-relational datastores, and other not-entirely-universal components.
You are sensitive to performance issues and routinely provide input based on your analysis of what caching would be helpful, how to address database performance issues, etc.

Experience

At least three years' experience in systems administration/engineering for distributed, high-volume web services.

You have experience in API design, and RESTful services are second nature for you. You're also comfortable with binary wire protocols, and know when to prefer one over the other.
You have been exposed to service-oriented architectures. You're comfortable with the idea of combining data from various sources on the fly, and with figuring out how to get it fast.
Since you care about scalability and are something of an out-of-the-box thinker, it's likely that you have extensive experience with non-relational data stores as well (Sleepycat, BigTable, Cassandra, etc.).
You have an unusually comprehensive systems-level understanding of web services. You can think backwards from an SLA to figure out what types od redundancy are needed and how to provide it inexpensively, using open-source technologies.

You have a deep understanding of how people want to use mobile technology, and what will and won't work. You have strong opinions on what is good or bad design, and you can pitch in wherever and however needed.
If you have experience with back-end web engineering, so much the better. It won't be your primary responsibility, but it's great perspective.

Experience

At least two years' experience writing software for major mobile platforms (iPhone, RIM, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, etc.).
iPhone development experience, with applications in the app store.

You will design digital solutions that help Ebates acquire new members, help our members save more when they shop online and help our merchant partners drive cost-effective customer acquisition campaigns. You will work closely with our engineering team to develop the products that you conceive and with our sales and marketing team to launch and promote them. 

Responsibilities:

Create product vision, develop functional requirements and user interface standards for next generation of ebates.com products
Identify best-of-breed software platforms for integration into the ebates.com technology toolkit
Work closely with Engineering on technical design, release planning, testing, deployment and post-release stabilization
Interface with Technical Operations and Customer Service to deliver products that are stable and well-supported
Coordinate with Sales and Marketing during product conception phase and to launch, monetize and analyze ongoing effectiveness of products
Work with members, partners and merchants to identify product opportunities, guide development of features and determine effectiveness of launched products
Monitor competitive landscape for threats and opportunities to ensure that Ebates remains best-in-class
Constantly analyze and report product success

Key Qualifications:

At least 4 years of product management experience
Strong experience managing web-based software products; big plus for experience with social network applications, browser extensions/toolbars or mobile applications
Experience with two or more of the following: search marketing tools, email marketing platforms, online advertising platforms, A/B and multi-variant testing tools, advanced web analytics
Demonstrated experience in affiliate marketing a plus
Experience implementing personalization and optimization platforms a big plus
Excellent user-experience design instincts
Project management experience (both technical and non-technical aspects of projects)
Effective written communication and presentation skills
Comfortable with agile development methodologies, especially rapid prototypes and Iterative development
Passionate and opinionated about building great consumer experiences!

We are looking for an experienced Sr. Software Engineer to help design, build and maintain the software that powers our website. This position will be part of our core development team whose delivery of key functionality enables our success thru close teamwork, iterative development and innovation.

You must enjoy working on the leading edge of technology and be able to bring your experiences to bear to help us successfully create new products in a fast-paced environment. We are a java-based, open source software shop - our cornerstone technologies are java, hibernate, spring, apache, resin, tomcat, lucene, velocity, struts, tiles and postgres.

The ideal candidate will have at least 6 years of Java-based software development experience building enterprise scale applications, preferably high volume consumer retail websites. The candidate must be capable of solving complex business problems with limited information and challenging timelines.

Responsibilities:

Architect and implement scalable, high performance, and high quality enterprise level application in SaaS environment.
Work with platform teams and other application teams closely on object, application and UI designs.
Prepare and review design and test plan documents.
Work with cross functional teams in agile environment.
Provide mentorship to other engineers in the team.

Qualifications:

10+ years of software development experience with minimum 5+ years in enterprise application with emphasis in application and UI development.
Excellent Java skills with 5+ years of experience.
Experience with Hibernate and Flex.
Familiarity with Apache, Tomcat, and Resin, Spring, Struts, Lucene.
Experience dealing with HTTP, web frameworks and web containers.
Highly skilled with a contemporary IDE (Eclipse, etc.)
Proficient in UNIX/Linux.
Familiarity with CVS or SVN.
An understanding of collaborative development, design patterns, O/R mapping technologies, and relational DB technology.
Have played in leadership role in product development and delivery.

Education

Four-year college degree, preferably in Information Technology, Computer Science or similar. Consideration may be given to exceptional individuals possessing alternate training and/or a minimum of 5 years related work experience.
